A world where everyone's ugly. And then they're not. By Scott Westerfeld

Cover Design

We felt that the current cover of Uglies appealed mainly to a feminine audience, when in fact the story should appeal to all readers. Instead of showing a face beneath of a blanket, surrounded by glittery fingernails, we redesigned the cover to incorporate more of the essential plot items. For example, we decided to center Tally directly in the center of the cover because she is the main character. She is holding her hoverboard because it is the symbol of her rebellion, since she uses it in most instances to escape as well as subvert authority. On her left is the image of a forest to show her desire to live freely and according to her own desires. On her right is an image of the City, which Tally is constantly considering giving into by returning. Tally’s expression should be one of confidence, rather than the submissive pose on the original cover. This story is about standing up for one’s conviction, and this should be reflected on the cover. While the current back cover copy adequately describes the trials that Tally must face, the back cover does show all four book covers from the entire series. These would need to be redesigned in order to match the redesigned cover.
